In many of the world’s big cities, competitive real estate markets and sky-high rent prices make living alone difficult or unattainable for many. As a result, the demand for affordable, alternative types of housing keeps growing. This is the niche that co-living is filling.

Co-living is a residential community living model that accommodates unrelated people in the same dwelling unit. It is a type of community that provides shared housing for people with similar values or intentions.

It brings together a wide variety of urban dwellers under one roof, with communal living spaces. In today’s shared economy where co-working and ride-sharing are rising in popularity, co-living is the ideal solution. Co-living allows anyone, from students and young professionals to millennials and baby boomers, to live in urban areas. This modern form of communal living is definitely here to stay.

Generally, co-living alternate housing options are popular in cities such as London and Amsterdam, where it has become a hip choice for young professionals.

A new form of co-living is being proposed by one of Sargeant Planning’s clients in Townsville.

The purpose designed building provides residents with suited rooms where they have their own space and privacy. They can engage with the larger household in the communal lounge and kitchen facilities.

Also key to the success of this alternate housing option is the provision of on-site management to ensure a cohesive living environment.

Co Living in Townsville is within walking distance of the centre of town and main urban entertainment areas.

“It is exciting going through the detailed design process for this alternative housing model” said Cameron McKean, lead town planner for the project.
